The creative process in design through which one arrives at the realisation of the object is the theme of MCA Design's exhibition 'L'atelier del Design: oggetti, materiali, esperienze', hosted at the Milan headquarters of MCA - Mario Cucinella Architects. The exhibition occupies the first of the three levels of the old Opificio from the 1930s, now a creative breeding ground for architects, engineers, designers, and the young professionals attending the SOS - School of Sustainability master course.
"The Atelier of Design: Objects, Materials, Experiences" includes more than 20 works designed by architect Mario Cucinella and Unit MCA Design collaborating with some of the best-known companies and craftsmen on the Made in Italy scene.
The exhibition presents three points of investigation: the creative idea (sketches and inspirations), the materials and, the concrete object, the exhibition focus. "The Atelier of Design: Objects, Materials, Experiences" shows Cucinella's perspective within a journey of discovery and research in dialogue with his architecture.
Among the objects on display will be the new collections created with Mariantonia Urru, a historical company of Sardinian craftsmanship; Officine Tamborrino, an Apulian company that makes research on materials its hallmark; and Greggio Argenterie, a leading company in the production and distribution of silver-plated alloy objects. These will be flanked by design objects born out of collaborations with Artemide, one of the world's best-known lighting brands, known for its 'Human and Responsible Light' philosophy; Danese Milano, a historic name in Italian design for objects and furniture; and Lucifero's, a Bologna-based company specialising in the production of high-quality architectural lighting fixtures;
The Building Objects collection, designed by architect Cucinella, will also display. Unique pieces of design that take inspiration from formal and structural elements of specific architectures, including the "La Balena" nursery school in Guastalla (RE); the Luigi Rovati Foundation Museum; the Green School designed for the Middle East; the Kwame Nkrumah Presidential Library at Volta Lake in Ghana and the Peace House in Scanzano Jonico (MT). The final result presents a partial recognisability with respect to the reference model. All, however, within expressive, coherent, and organic research, parallel but also convergent to the architect's daily work.
